Chocolate Tin Maths

There are several different chocolate tins available to buy around Christmas time, but which is best for you and your family?

This is not just about which flavours different family members like but the amount of them within the mix.

You would hope that in one of these tins, you would have the same number of each flavour.

Unfortunately, this is not true.

Below are some pie charts showing averages for how many of each flavour are in each of the four top selling tins.

A pie chart showing the contents of a tin of Celebrations. It shows that the average box is made up of; 11% Maltesers, 11% Bounty, 18% Milky Way, 9% Twix, 17% Mars, 17% Snickers, 9% Galaxy, 8% Galaxy Caramel.
A pie chart showing the contents of a tin of Heroes. It shows that the average box is made up of; 8% Twirl, 11% Dairy Milk, 8% Wispa, 11% Crunchie, 11% Dairy Milk Caramel, 10% Fudge, 13% Creme Egg Twisted, 13% Dinky Decker, 15% Cadbury Eclair.
A pie chart showing the contents of a tin of Quality Street. It shows that the average box is made up of; 7% Milk Chocolate Block, 6% Green Triangle, 8% The Purple One, 8% Orange Crunch, 8% Caramel Swirl, 15% Strawberry Delight, 11% Fudge, 6% Chocolate Caramel Brownie, 8% Toffee Finger, 13% Orange Creme, 10% Coconut Eclair
A pie chart showing the contents of a tin of Roses. It shows that the average box is made up of; 10% Golden Barrel, 10% Dairy Milk, 10% Hazel Whirl, 11% Hazel in Caramel, 7% Signature Truffle, 16% Caramel, 11% Strawberry Dream, 9% Tangy Orange Creme, 16% Country Fudge.

Today's Challenge

Siân managed to get a great deal on a 2.4kg refill box of Celebrations. She wanted to know if the same percentages applied with a larger box.

Below is a comparison between the tin and her box.

A repeat of the above pie chart for a tin of Celebrations
A pie chart for Siân's 2.4kg box of Celebrations. It is made up of; 12% Maltesers, 14% Bounty, 16% Milky Way, 8% Twix, 19% Mars, 15% Snickers, 8% Galaxy, 8% Galaxy Caramel.

A tin of celebrations holds 60 chocolates, and the box Siân bought contains 4 full tin refills.

  1. How many more Mars would she get in the box compared to if she bought 4 tins?

  2. How many Twix will she miss out on if she buys a box instead of 4 tins?

  3. Her family's favourites are Milky Way, Bounty, and Snickers. Which is the best option to buy for them (the box or 4 tins)? How many more would they have in the better option?

Extra Challenge

Is your box of chocolates average?

If you are lucky enough to have a tin or box of one of these mixes, is it average? Can you produce your own pie chart to compare?

Merry Christmas!
