Christmas Cookies

Llŷr always bakes his own cookies to put out for Santa on Christmas Eve.

This year, he wants to make Santa's favourite cookies. However, he doesn't know what they are.

So, Llŷr writes to Mrs Claus to ask.

Mrs Claus is delighted to receive such a kind request and agrees to help.

There is a slight problem. Mrs Claus makes these cookies using magic.

The thing about magic though, is that she must know the exact ingredients of the cookie to make one magically appear.

Mrs Claus writes the recipe down and sends it to Llŷr

Dear Llŷr

Thank you for the lovely letter. I think it's a fantastically kind gesture to bake Santa's favourite cookies this year.

I have jotted down the ingredients below.

Santa's Favourite Cookie Recipe

One cookie contains:

  • 6g butter or soft spread

  • 916g caster sugar

  • 130 egg

  • 130 egg yolk

  • 130tsp vanilla extract

  • 130tsp cinnamon

  • 130tsp nutmeg

  • 10g plain flour

I hope this helps. Good luck and Merry Christmas

Love from

Mrs Claus

The challenge

Llŷr needs your help scaling the recipe up to make a batch of cookies. Besides, how can he possible measure out 130 of an egg?

Can you re-write the recipe to make 30 cookies?

Baking instructions

After several attempts at creating these cookies, Llŷr has finally figured out the best way to make them.

Below are the baking instructions for this recipe for you to try at home.

Please make sure you have permission and supervision from a responsible adult.

  1. Whisk the butter until soft (an electric mixer helps if you have one).

  2. Add the sugar gradually as you continue to whisk.

  3. Continue whisking until light and fluffy.

  4. Stir in the egg, egg yolk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg with a wooden spoon.

  5. Add the flour and continue to stir until all mixed together into a dough.

  6. Roll into a ball and place into a fridge to chill for 30 minutes.
If the dough is still too moist to roll in a ball keep adding and stirring in more flour until it forms a firmer dough. If the opposite is true, and the mixture is too dry to stick together, add small amounts of milk to the mixture.

  7. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C

  8. Roll out the mixture to a thickness of about 3mm on a floured surface.

  9. Cut out the shapes you wish to use using cookie cutters.

  10. Space these out on a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper or baking parchment.

  11. Bake in the oven until they start to turn light brown (about 8-10 minutes).

  12. Place on a wire rack to cool.

  13. These can be served plain or decorated.
